Amount of Tuition Fees
The amount of tuition fees varies depending on the School/Graduate School and the year of admission. Please check the “School/Graduate School Study Guide ” distributed at the time of admission. You can also check the Waseda University website “Tuition and Fees” page (Japanese only) or the International Admissions Office website “Tuition and Visa” page.
-
- For enchousei and students who have not advanced to the next grade, the amount of tuition fees will vary depending on the number of credits that are insufficient to meet the graduation (completion) requirements at the end of the previous semester. For details, please refer to “●Tuition for Enchousei and Students Who Have Not Advanced to the Next Grade“.
- You can also check the details of the tuition fee amount on the Notification for Automatic Debit Transfer of Tuition and Fees (Postcard) that was mailed to the tuition fee payer about 10 days before the automatic debit transfer date.
Tuition Fees for Leave of Absence or Withdrawal

Tuition Fees for Enchousei and Students Who Have Not Advanced to the Next Grade
Definition of “Enchousei”
Students who extend their period of study beyond the standard years of study are called enchousei. Periods of leave of absence or study abroad are not considered to count toward your “period of study” but count toward your “period of enrollment” (*). Therefore, there may be cases where your period of enrollment may be longer than your standard years of study, but you are not considered to be enchousei.
*If your student status is “Study Abroad” during your period of study abroad, and including all or part of your period of study abroad toward your period of study has been approved, that period of study abroad will count as your period of study.
Standard years of study |
---|
Undergraduate: 4 years, Master’s degree (1 year course): 1 year, Master’s Degree (1.5 year course): 1.5 years, Master’s degree (2 year course): 2 years, Doctoral degree: 3 years, Integrated Doctoral Program: 5 years |
*However, for undergraduate schools with an advancement system, this term refers to students whose period of study exceeds three years after being advanced.
*In the case of students who have transferred to another school or students who are re-admitted, this term applies to those who have exceeded the standard years of study including the period of study prior to the transfer or re-admission.
*The standard years of study shown above is based on students who have entered the university starting from first year. Therefore, for those who have entered university starting from second year or above (due to transfer, etc.), the standard years of study will be set accordingly, and the term refers to those whose period of study exceeds the respective standard years of study (there are cases where a student will be considered enchousei even if their period of study is less than the standard years of study listed above).
A student’s eligibility for enchousei tuition or the schedule for account transfer depends on the student’s period of enrollment and period of study.
Case 1: Both the period of enrollment and period of study exceed the standard years of study.
・Enchousei tuition will apply.
・The enchousei tuition payment schedule will apply.
Case 2: The period of enrollment exceeds the standard years of study, but the period of study does not.
・The enchousei tuition does not apply.
・The enchousei tuition payment schedule will apply.

Tuition Fees for Enchousei
The tuition fees for enchousei are calculated based on the number of unfulfilled credits required for graduation at the end of the previous semester, and the amount of tuition is determined by totaling the other fees. The method of calculation and the category of tuition fees for enchousei differ depending on the year of admission. For the tuition payment schedule for enchousei, please refer to “02_Payment of Tuition Fees > Tuition Payment Schedule”.
- Attention
- Even if the period of enrollment exceeds the standard years of study, if the period of study does not exceed the standard years of study, then tuition must be paid in full amount regardless of the number of unfulfilled credits.
- For students who are studying abroad in a program in which they pay tuition to Waseda University (many exchange programs, double degree programs, and domestic study abroad at Doshisha University), and who become an enchousei during their study abroad period or study abroad after becoming an enchousei, the amount of tuition fees during their study abroad period will be the prescribed amount (full amount) regardless of the number of unfilled credits.
- For enchousei who are transfer students, re-enrolled students, re-admitted students, and students who have taken a leave of absence due to military service, please contact the office of your School/Graduate School individually as the method of calculating the fixed amount of tuition will vary.
- The handling of tuition fees may differ depending on the School/Graduate School. If you have any questions, please consult or confirm with the office of your School/Graduate School.
Tuition for Students Who Have Not Advanced to the Next Grade
If a student does not meet the requirements for advancement in a undergraduate school that has introduced a advancement system, the tuition fees for the student who has not been advanced will be calculated based on the number of unfulfilled credits required for advancement at the end of the previous semester, and the total amount of tuition and other fees will be determined.
- School of Culture, Media and Society: Please refer to the website of your school (only in Japanese).
- School of Humanities and Social Sciences: Please refer to the website of your school (only in Japanese).
- School of Fundamental Science and Engineering (Japanese-based Program only): For the amount of tuition and fees for students who have not advanced to the next grade, replace the “Number of Required credits for degree completion” with the “Number of Required credits for advancement” in the “Tuition Calculation Method for Enchousei”. For tuition, replace the 4th grade student with the 2nd grade student; for other than tuition, replace the 4th grade student with the 1st grade student.

Method of Calculating the Number of Unfulfilled Credits
The number of unfulfilled credits will be calculated as follows.
Method of calculating the number of unfulfilled credits |
---|
Number of unfulfilled credits = Number of Required credits for degree completion – Number of credits counted toward degree required credits at the end of the previous semester |
1) Concept
Total Number of Required credits for degree completion minus Number of credits counted toward degree required credits at the point of completion of the previous semester will be calculated as the number of unfulfilled credits.
2) Treatment of non-completion of required courses
If the Number of credits counted toward degree required credits has been met but there are unfulfilled credits in the required courses, the unfulfilled credits will be calculated as 0 credits. Regardless of the number of required courses not earned, the calculation will be based on the Number of credits counted toward degree required credits.
3) Treatment of the Number of credits not counted toward degree required credits
Credits for courses that cannot be taken as “credits counted toward degree required” or courses not taken as “credits counted toward degree required“ will not be included in the calculation of unfulfilled credits.
4) Treatment of cases where there is a maximum number of credits that can be included toward degree requirements
If there is a limit to the number of credits that can be counted, such as “Students may register for any number of foreign language courses, but no more than 12 credits of foreign language courses will be counted as required credits for degree completion,” the same approach will apply as in ”2) Treatment of non-completion of required courses”. Therefore, if a student has fulfilled the number of required credits for degree completion, including the 18 credits of foreign language courses in an undergraduate where up to 12 credits are counted as required credits, the unfulfilled credits will be zero.
