10-02-01. Use Safe Exam Browser
1．Overview of Safe Exam Browser
Safe Exam Browser (hereinafter referred to as “SEB”) is a dedicated web browser designed to restrict user operations during online examinations. By integrating SEB with the quiz function of Waseda Moodle, it is possible to limit access to other websites and applications, as well as operations such as copy and paste during the exam.
2．Operating Systems
- Recommended: Windows, macOS
- Not Recommended: iOS
- Unsupported: Android
Depending on the situation in which SEB is used, it can be somewhat effective in preventing cheating when using Windows or macOS. However, its effectiveness is minimal on iOS.

※An ID and password are required to view Teach Anywhere. For more information, please view “[Important]Regarding reference to Teach Anywhere” in the Announcements section (From Individuals/Department administrative offices/Important Announcements) of your MyWaseda page’s Home tab (Top page).
3．Precautions
- SEB cannot completely prevent cheating. Please use this feature with a full understanding of its limitations.
- When using SEB for quizzes, inform students in advance to install SEB and conduct a test quiz to verify its operation.
Even if a pre-check is conducted, there is a possibility that SEB may not function properly during the actual exam due to PC malfunctions or other issues. Please prepare alternative measures for emergencies. - The use of SEB can be selected on a per-quiz basis in Waseda Moodle.
- If SEB is enabled for a quiz, that quiz cannot be taken without using SEB.
- Depending on the version of Windows or macOS, or the device used, SEB may not function properly.
- SEB cannot be installed on PCs in PC rooms.
4．Required Preparations
To use SEB for quizzes in Waseda Moodle, simply configure the settings in the quiz setup screen. Instructions for configuration are provided later.

5．Configuration Procedure in Moodle
SEB allows for detailed configuration, but it is recommended to use the existing template.
An example of configuration using the existing template is as follows:
Configuration Steps:
- In the quiz settings screen, select “Require the use of Safe Exam Browser” → “Yes – Use an existing template” (default is No).
- It is recommended to leave other SEB settings at their default values.
6．Usage Example
When conducting quizzes in Waseda Moodle using SEB, the following format is recommended:
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Style Examination
| Overview | Students bring and use their own devices for the exam. |
| Devices Used | Students’ personal devices ・SEB must be installed and tested in advance. ・Smartphones and tablets are not allowed. |
| Exam Environment | Classroom ・Since students’ devices cannot be fully controlled, in-class monitoring during the examination is essential. |
